But another hallmark of summer is the abundance of fresh, local produce, picked up at the farmers market.
Some local farmers markets are open year-round too, but summertime is undeniably farmers market season.
The farmers market season is well underway, and will carry local foodies right into early fall, with some markets even staying open during the colder months.
And it’s not just about the fresh, locally-grown produce, as good as that it is. While you’re shopping, you can usually also enjoy indulgent, flavorful offerings from local food vendors, and shop for unique, hand-made items from area crafters.
Plus, some markets also offer entertainment and activities.
Here are just some of the farmers markets and stands around Greater Fall River where you can find fresh, local produce this summer:
Tiverton Farmers Market
The Tiverton Farmers Market has moved outdoors for the summer, to the Tiverton Town Farm Recreational Area, south field at 3588 Main Rd. ( Route 77).
Through Oct. 13, they’re open every Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The summer farmers market offers a range of produce and products, with fresh veggies and fruits, meats and seafood, eggs, artisanal breads, cheese and honey, prepared foods, pottery, linens, and so much more.
During the cooler months, the market is at its winter location, from Oct. 27 to May 18: Tiverton Middle School, 10 Quintal Dr. Hours are Sundays, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Southcoast Open Air Market, Somerset
It’s SOAM season.
Centered around all things local, fresh, and handmade, the Southcoast Open Air Market’s season is well underway.
They feature a wide selection of fresh produce and meats, handmade goods, handcrafted foods, and live and local music.
The Southcoast Open Air Market is open on Saturdays, with upcoming markets on July 20, Aug. 24, Sept. 21, and Oct. 19. The market is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Rain dates are the next day.
It’s located in Chick Marchand Memorial Park, 100 Newhill Ave., Somerset.
Parking is available at the park, and there is a grass lot right next to Grace Bible Church, 802 Riverside Ave.

Johnson’s Roadside Farm Market, Swansea
Johnson’s Roadside Farm Market has been offering seasonal fruits and vegetables for sale from their 20-acre farm at this family-run market since 1982.
The market also offers fresh baked goods, and locally-made specialty items. Plus, they carry meats and cheeses, local honey, and a variety of rubs and seasonings.
They’re open every day, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 445 Market St., Swansea.
Their season runs until Christmas Eve.

Almeida’s Vegetable Patch, Swansea
For nearly a century, locals have been getting fresh produce from Almeida’s Vegetable Patch, 110 Grand Army of the Republic Hwy., Swansea.
Family owned and operated since 1928, they’ve got produce from their farm, as well as other local farms.
Plus, they’ve got locally-sourced pies and products, different varieties of flowers, and more.
Almeida’s also has seasonal favorites, like pumpkins in the fall, and Christmas trees during the holiday season.
Their hours are Monday to Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Mass in Motion is stepping off into farmers market season, plus there’s a year-round option, with the Fall River Farmers Markets.
On Tuesdays, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., there is a farmers market at Saint Anne’s Hospital, 795 Middle St. Take Bus Route 3: S. Main and Middle.
Wednesdays, from 2 to 5 p.m., there is a farmers market at HealthFirst Family Care Center, 387 Quarry St. Take Bus Route 6: Pleasant and Ferry.
On Fridays, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and open year round, find a farmers market at Cardinal Medeiros Towers, 1197 Robeson St. Take Bus Route 4: Robeson and Stanley.
